MySql5.0 & NetBeans IDE6.9

estou estudando este curso java starter hands on, na 9ª aula em 52mim. e 50sec.
Quando eu executo o progama nao mostra nem um erro, mas apos eu clicar no jbotão "Novo" nao funciona o comando de habilitar campos e apresenta o seguinte erro:

pelo que vi acho que é uma conexão mau sucedida com o mysql... sua versão possa ser insatisfatória para determinado comando.
